Bitdefender is one of the top Mac antivirus program. It is a top performer in malware detection and a host of other useful security features. However, the program isn’t free of imperfections.
The default interface is easy-to-navigate and groups features into 3 categories: Privacy, Security, and Utilities. The Protection tab is mostly dedicated to features you’d expect from an antivirus software, such as real time scanning, firewall monitoring, and ransomware countermeasures. The Privacy tab offers suggestions on how to be secure on the internet, such as a secure browser that runs websites inside an sandbox to stop malware from infecting the normal browser. The Utilities tab includes optimization tools, as well as a file shredder which overwrites files with specialized algorithms to make them unrecoverable, even if they have been deleted.
Other features are also available on premium plans, including a useful password manager as well as a solution called Anti-Tracker that can stop the excessive tracking that is carried out by various websites. The program also offers an vulnerability scan that can detect outdated apps, weak passwords, and Windows updates that haven’t been applied. It also has a quick custom scan that only takes five minutes to complete, which is much faster than other competitors like Norton and TotalAV.
The only issue with the app is that it takes a long time to install which may be frustrating to users who are eager to start. The “Reveal in the Finder” feature of the application doesn’t work. It’s a curious choice for an antivirus application which competes with other products that can do the same in just a few clicks.
