Synopsis
Anora, a young sex worker from Brooklyn, meets and impulsively marries the son of an oligarch. When news reaches Russia, her fairy tale is threatened when his parents travel to New York to have the marriage annulled. Mikey Madison reflects on the roles that shaped her path to Anora from Better Things. to Once Upon a Time… Mikey Madison said at a Cannes Film Festival press conference that director Sean Baker and his wife, producer Samantha Quan, would play different sex positions to show the actors what he wanted them to do.. In the Vegas scene, the actor points to "McCarran Airport." Although Las Vegas International Airport was known as McCarran International Airport for many decades, in 2021 its name was changed to Harry Reid International Airport at the end of the year. STOP! screams!. The hype around Anora is huge and it has paid off. I had no idea what to expect going into this, except that I was combining all three of Sean Baker’s other movies in my head and thought maybe it would be somewhere in between ( The Florida Project , Red Rocket , and Tangerine , all great movies, by the way, and everything about sex workers). It had some similar tones and focus, but otherwise Anora was a new beast. I will say that the movie part got WAY more Safdie Brothers than I expected! Lots of people yelling at each other for a very long time!
You have your party, your conflict and your conclusions
Very busy! The film, like many great films, unfolds in three acts. I had a feeling early on that the structure was going to feel a little like Boogie Nights, and I’d say it was very good. Without saying too much about it, I will say that the ending made the whole movie for me and my girlfriend agreed. You have a 2 hour experience that is mostly funny and mostly riveting, it all feels a little lame but still offers a lot of very important information about the sex work experience, but it all seems like fun until you get to the end. Instead of an ending that wraps things up nicely with a nice little bow, this is an ending that unties the bow, opens the box, and leaves the RAW reality of it all behind. I was a bit mesmerized, taking in the very specific energy of the packed room as the silent credits rolled and people very slowly began (very quietly) to leave the auditorium.
Mikey Madison is fantastic as Anora
After seeing the promo for the movie, I was expecting a bubbly, cute girl – but she plays a tough, sassy, VERY New York hustler, and that was a pleasant surprise. Anora is usually a likable character, but not always, and this only adds to her humanity and overall realism and her functionality as a protagonist. You’ll experience a rollercoaster of highs and lows with it, and the depth feels very real. She is also very HOT and there is a LOT of SEX in this movie. The entire cast is fantastic, but new faces Mark Eidelshtein and Jura Borisov make the strongest impressions of talented actors who deserve much more in the future. Eidelstein stole the show as the most believable ragtag rich boy ever, and Borisov’s nuances were loud AF without requiring many words. I really think this is one of Baker’s two best films to date, possibly his best, and one of the best of 2024.

movies. It’s really great to see this movie doing well. the house was absolutely packed and I heard the opening weekend numbers were some of the biggest this year. This is the kind of original, heartfelt, relevant filmmaking that needs to be seen, celebrated and supported, and I’m glad it’s happening. I’m glad Mikey Madison’s career has blossomed after that and I can’t wait for more from Sean Baker.
