CIA operative Joe tries to balance his personal and professional life as the spearhead of the agency’s war on terror. Real-life military advisors helped create a more authentic representation of weapon handling, house cleaning, positioning, squad-based action, etc… Mr. Sheridan knows how to bring us into testosterone-fueled machismo worlds without clichés and seemingly without an agenda. It is what it is.
Boys are simple
An apology is not necessary. His characters are always grounded and he is extremely skilled at casting. But to be great, you have to write good roles for women. The writing should be as good, if not better, than for men. Women are more intelligent, more complex.
They are strong and convincing
Beth from Yellowstone (great character and performance), the barrel riders, the lonely female ranch hand (the fantastic Jen Landon as Teeter), all great female characters who fit into the world of the story in a natural, effortless way. Not only 'partner…' or T & A. He stepped up his game with the excellent character Faith Hill, whom she crushed in "1883" followed by Dame Mirren at the misfire that was “1923”. Now we have Zoe Saldana doing some of the best stuff of her career. I totally believe her as the head of the CIA in an open marriage (nice touch).
As for the face!
I buy De Oliveira as a broken woman with a burning rage who won’t stop and thank you thank you thank you to the writers/directors/producers for not letting her get the best of a fellow soldier plus a hundred pounds of muscle. Truth first! I think her character is much more interesting if she’s someone who needs to be knocked out cold or just beaten to the ground before she stops. Now let’s talk about Jill Wagner or should I say her hair? From dirty Hallmark to super badass specials?
I buy it
Special mention: Ms. Lanier as the ugly teenage daughter. I look forward to the arc created for this loose canon as long as they continue to avoid the clichés of teenage angst. Good actor, might be interesting…
